Thai Funk
by Corey
Very few genres have shape-shifted across the globe like Thai funk. Rooted in reverb-heavy vocals, inventive, twangy guitar solos, and animated bass lines, Thai funk marries the principles of Western funk and psychedelic rock with traditional styles of Thai rock music in the 70s. Once seemingly overlooked in the US, the Texas-based trio Khruangbin most emblematically upholds Thai funk’s intricate and delicate rhythms in its modern form. Resisting the West's reductive ‘world music’ moniker, Thai Funk continues to define and reflect its unique international sonic dialogue. Throw on these tracks below for a primer on Thai funk, both original and reinvented.
Tommy Guerrero - Throwing Stones at the Moon
Khruangbin - People Everywhere (Still Alive)
Arc De Soleil - Got Caught in Amsterdam
Suda Chuenbarn - Funky Broadway
Petch Pintong - Soul Lum Piern
The Impossibles - Mister Slow

Curated Playlist ↓
This week’s curated playlist is presented by an Elsewhere mainstay behind the decks, Tone Troy –

From Tone Troy:
"I like to think my taste is a little bit eclectic. I threw in some of my own original production but to be honest I got a lot more excited putting on some of my favorite tunes I've played out over the years. In almost all of these records, I have a good memory that goes with them. From Acid, to Tech House, to Breaks, to Jackin, to Techno... everything here encapsulated my happiness in the booth. Hope you enjoy it and hope to see you soon at Zone 1 for my first official label event and album release party of 'Out Of Pocket Records'!"
